Specialist for digital goods trains

PJ Monitoring is a specialist of digital rail freight. As an innovation leader, we have realised the first overall digital system that both fulfils comprehensive monitoring and automated applications. The Automatic Brake Test is the first approved system worldwide and is regarded as the European reference system. Real-time monitoring such as monitoring the kingpin on intermodal wagons, brake analysis, derailment diagnosis and load weight monitoring are also unique applications providing various benifits for rail transport’s use cases.

Company history

PJ Monitoring emerged from PJ Messtechnik, which was set up in 2006. Günter Petschnig and Martin Joch founded PJM as a spin-off from Graz University of Technology, specialising in the testing of rail vehicles. International customers soon came to trust in the expertise of the two company founders. The concept of the WaggonTracker system was developed back in 2010. The vision: to determine relevant and in-depth information about freight wagons in realtime and to modernise the outdated, manual work steps in rail transport through automation. The first pilot train was on track in 2015 and the WaggonTracker system has been expanded train by train ever since. In 2017, the steadily growing area of expertise in digital rail transport was transferred to PJ Monitoring GmbH.

PJ Monitoring at a glance

Today, PJ Monitoring is an innovation trailblazer and leading provider of digital technologies in rail freight. Among other things, PJM put Europe’s most intelligent goods train on track, created a European reference system with the approved automatic brake test, realised unique in-depth monitoring functions for freight wagons and established a globally unique overall digital system.

Range of services

  • Digitalisation & automation of rail freight transport
  • Founded in 2017, prior to which the area of expertise in PJ measurement technology was established
  • R&D rate: 21%
  • Export rate: 96%
  • 12 international and national awards

Managing Director

Günter Petschnig had dealt intensely with digitalisation and automation before these topics were widely discussed in the railway world. His visionary foresight is the cornerstone of PJ Monitoring’s innovative, forward-looking technologies. Thanks to 25 years of experience, Günter Petschnig has a profound know-how and understanding of systems

After studying mechanical engineering at Graz University of Technology, Günter Petschnig specialised in measurement technology: at the Institute of Machine Elements, he played a crucial role in setting up the measurement technology department. He has also been in charge of international measurement projects since 1999. In 2006, he founded PJ Messtechnik together with Martin Joch.

Christoph Lorenzutti has many years of experience in the technical industry in the areas of software development, hardware design, system integration and project management. Since 2014, he has been instrumental in the development and implementation of digital technologies and automatic brake testing at PJ Monitoring GmbH. He also knows every area and process like the back of his hand, making him an important contact for organisational development and planning.

Award-winning innovations

“Innovations optimise: They solve a problem or make something better.” Our clear aim was to tranfser rail transport into the 21st century, thus making it more attractive and faster. The WaggonTracker, the basic system of the intelligent goods train, completely fulfils this claim. Rail transport becomes more efficient, safer and faster, hence providing a wide range of benefits for both wagon keepers and railway companies. In addition, digital rail freight creates attractive and modern job profiles.

The digital WaggonTracker system was awarded with:

  • Innovation Award 2024 (automated brake test)
  • State Prize for Digitalization 2023
  • RailTech Innovation Award 2022 (Audience Choice)
  • Austrian Export Award 2022 (Gold in the category digitalisation)
  • Styrian Export Award 2022
  • ERCI Innovation Award 2021 (best SME among 17 European railway cluster states)
  • Mobility Award by VCÖ 2020
  • German Innovation Award Winner 2020
  • Finalist Houska Award 2020
  • Fast Forward Award 2019

Europe’s smartest freight train:

  • Mobility Award of VCÖ 2023 (category digitalisation)
  • Nomination State Prize for Engineering-Consulting 2023
